Not Every Studio Will Be “Your People” …And That’s Okay

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a dance educator and choreographer is that not every studio, dancer, or parent will mesh with your teaching or choreographic style and that’s completely okay.

We live in an industry filled with unique personalities, preferences, and approaches. Just like not everyone likes the same cookie or ice cream flavor, not everyone will connect with your movement, mindset, or class energy. Some like sweet, some like savory. Some love the storytelling, the raw emotion, and the unpredictability. Others prefer structure, sharpness, and familiarity. Neither is wrong; they’re just different.

I’ve had studios not ask me back because my choreography was too “out of the box,” or they didn’t vibe with my class flow, or maybe I just had an off day and flopped a little. It happens! It used to sting, but I’ve learned to see it for what it is…a moment, not a definition of my worth or ability.

We tell our dancers all the time, for every yes, you’ll get ten no’s. The same goes for us. Not every room will be your room. Not every dancer will respond to your methods. Not every parent will “get” what you’re doing. And that’s where growth happens, in the learning, the pivoting, and the trust that your people are out there.

So keep showing up with your heart and your authenticity. Keep teaching, creating, experimenting, and connecting. The right studios and dancers, (the ones who value your artistry, your words, and your passion) will find you. And when they do, it will feel right.

Because not everything you do is for everyone and that’s what makes what you do so special.✨
