Trust the Process: The Relationship Between Studios and Creativity
Over the years, I’ve learned that not every studio is the right fit for every choreographer and that’s okay. Some spaces are built for creativity to thrive, while others unintentionally stifle it. I’ve walked into studios where things feel so disorganized that it completely throws me off my rhythm. On the other hand, I’ve also been in studios where owners want so much control that their opinions begin to overshadow the very creative process they hired me for. Both situations can leave a choreographer feeling blocked, depleted, and defeated before the work even has a chance to unfold.
When you hire a choreographer, hire them fully. Be organized. Give them the time they need to set their piece and plan ahead. Most importantly, trust them. You brought them in for a reason. Let them take the reins and do what they do best, even if their vision doesn’t match yours right away. I always say, “trust the process.” My best work has always come from studios and dancers who allow me to be vulnerable, to take risks, and to experiment without judgment or constant questioning. That’s where the magic happens.
Be the studio that’s all in…or don’t hire out. Because the truth is, creativity only blooms in spaces that nurture trust, communication, and respect. If you have doubts about a choreographer’s style or process, that’s okay, but don’t waste their time or yours. The best art comes from collaboration built on belief, not control.
